The forecasts are part of a
joint-venture project between Explorersweb, SMHI, and Weathernews Inc.. The forecasts are made
for Everest and K2, but apply also to other mountains in the area.
The aim of the project is to build and refine a weather service for all the
8000 meter peaks in the Himalayas. The weather service is tailor-made daily
by professional meteorologists. It is translated from satellite data's and
images acquired several times daily from Europe's main weather center. The
service is sponsor-funded and free of charge to climbers. Extensive reports
are sent daily to the sat phones of participating expeditions.
The mountains create their own local weather systems. This makes forecasting
detailed weather for the Himalayan peaks difficult. The forecasts however
predict the frequent general systems of hurricane force winds and extreme
cold at various altitudes, and thus have a central part in the safety and
success of the expeditions.
Meteorologists and climbers are more than welcome to join the project.
